“For too long, the discussion about public education reform has been focused on the ‘intractables.’ Solutions have become mired in the complexity of the problems, momentum for reform has been gained and lost, and proposals for large-scale systemic reform have been scaled-back to produce incremental changes that have had little overall impact on student achievement. As part of The Broad Residency, I look forward to working with a group individuals who believe that the opportunity to significantly improve educational opportunities for this country’s most disadvantaged youth is within our reach.”

Shayne Spalten currently serves as the chief human resources officer for the Denver Public Schools. In this role, she is responsible for developing and implementing human capital policies and practices to support the goals of attracting and retaining the very best employees for the Denver Public Schools and ensuring an effective teacher in every classroom. Prior to assuming her current role, Spalten served in the office of new schools, where she led all aspects of the authorization and evaluation of charter schools and helped develop the district’s first process for soliciting proposals for new schools in the district. She joined the Denver Public Schools after practicing law in Denver and Washington D.C. She has served in the litigation office for the University of Colorado and taught education law at Harvard University and the University of Denver. Spalten participated in The Broad Residency in Urban Education Cohort 2008, serving her two-year Residency in Denver Public Schools.
